#1 HEPA Filters

Most air purifiers today consist of true HEPA filters. It is the basic and most common type of air purifying technology.

A HEPA air purifier consists of multiple layers of filters made of foam, cotton, fiberglass, and other particle-trapping materials. These filters can capture pollutants measuring 0.3 to 1 micron. These particles include dust, animal fur, pollen, mold, fumes, gas, chemicals, bacteria, and pathogens.

HEPA air purifiers clean the air by trapping the particles using multiple layers of filter. Once the particles are trapped, the air that goes out of the unit is fresh and clean.

#2 Ozone Generators

Ozone generators and ionizers work similarly with HEPA filters. However, it produces charged ions or ozone instead of trapping air contaminants using layers of filters.

Air contaminants have a neutral charge. When they come in contact with an ozone generator, they became charged which causes the particles to get trapped.

Aside from trapping air particles, ozone generators work best in absorbing odors. It can trap unpleasant odors from tobacco, cooking, and fumes. It is one of the reasons why ozone generators are popular in hotels.

Beware that ozone generators are not advisable for households with family members suffering from respiratory issues. The ozone in the air can cause irritation, chest pain, and shortness of breath.

#3 Ultraviolet Light Purifiers

As its name suggests, an ultraviolet light air purifier utilizes UV rays to kill microbes, pathogens, and viruses in the air. The microorganisms that pass through the UV air purifier immediately get killed making sure the air that comes out of the system is healthy.

#4 Electrostatic Filters

Electrostatic filters charge air contaminants in the air. Hence, it works similarly to ozone generators. It practically collects impurities by charging them within the unit.

Like ozone generators, electrostatic filters produce ozone. Thus, it is not recommended to families with members that have respiratory problems.

#5 Activated Carbon

Activated carbon air purifiers are a popular option next to HEPA purifiers. It utilizes activated carbon filters to capture particles, odor, and different kinds of volatile organic compounds.
